Bloglines: Another tool for blasting The Great Firewall of China

April 10, 2008 · Print This Article

Having been in China for almost two years, I had experienced several websites and domains being blocked by the Great Firewall of China. From time to time, popular websites like Youtube, Wordpress, Blogger, and Feedburner will be blocked by China’s IP filtering and preventing everyone from surfing those sites from within the China portals. As of writing this entry, domains like *.wordpress.com, *.blogspot.com and those domains hosted by wordpress.com and blogger are inaccessible. Pity me for I can’t visit my favorite bloggers. I could using proxy servers but not only it prevents me from leaving a comment, it also prevents the images from loading properly. Worse, my computer gets infected with virus and spywares.

But I am the Blog Almighty, ruler of the cyberworld. Not even the Great Firewall of China could stop me from monitoring feeds from my minions. The deities from Bloglines have manifested their interest to support my undertakings. Having your feeds delivered to my Bloglines reader, I could continue to watch over your actions.

Bloglines is a free web-based service which gathers news feeds, blogs and other rich web content. However, most bloggers are still unfamiliar with the workarounds in this web-based feed reader. Some have made their first attempts but did not continue because they got confused after submitting a site for feed gathering.

Lo and behold, here’s a simplified step-by-step process in gathering feeds through Bloglines feed reader.

Sign up for an account with bloglines. After confirming your email and logging in to your account, you are now ready to add feeds to your Bloglines feed reader.

1. After logging in, ignore whatever page Bloglines will direct you to. Just go back to the homepage and click the subscribe area as indicated below with a blue halo (the blue halo will not be visible on your browser though).

2. On the Blog or Feed URL text area, enter the URL of the blog or website you wish to gather content from (it’s best to enter just the home page URL instead of the actual feed source).

3. Several feeds will come out on the preceding page. This is where most of the Bloglines users are getting confused. So to ease your worries, just click on the first option that appears.

4. Below the feeds page are other options for customizing your feeds. You may leave them as they are or fill in the Notes area to properly identify your feeds.

5. Click the subscribe button to finish.

Once you have done so, you will be redirected to your feed list and you will have the option to add a few more. Did I told you that was easy?
